The Federalists, strongest in New England, had always opposed the War of 1812. In late 1814, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island organized a "constitutional" convention in Hartford with a view towards secession of the New England States. The chief conspirator in the plan was Senator William Plumer of New Hampshire (who, as a presidential elector in 1820, cast the single opposing vote to James Monroe). The convention lasted from December 15, 1814 to January 4, 1815. Five states sent twenty-six delegates. The Treaty of Ghent was signed prior to its adjournment, ending the war and all opposition to it. The 14" 9.25" [sight] engraved aquatint cartoon, titled "The Hartford Convention or Leap No Leap" ridicules the delegates, questioning their courage, patriotism and motives. They wish to abandon the land which produced a long line of heroes, identified in the lower left corner, including Andrew Jackson, the Hero of New Orleans. Signed "Wm. Charles", it is a classic American political cartoon. Published in December 1814 in partnership with Samuel Kennedy.
